En This film shows how human greed and ego can destroy everything that was once good. In the end, the greatest battle was never against monsters or gods, but against human nature itself. What struck me the most was Odysseus’ relentless desire to return home. He spent twenty years away from Ithaca: ten years at war, followed by years paying the price for every choice he made. His journey into Hades reflects that perfectly. There, he faces the men who died under his command and were never given a proper burial. For the first time, it feels like he truly understands the weight of being a king. After that, he spends seven years trapped on a beach that seems like paradise. It is there that Calypso meets a different Odysseus. Because of the lotus flower, she meets a man free from the weight of war, guilt, and his obsession with returning home. Maybe she was the only person who ever knew the man before he once again carried the burden of everything he had lived through. But when his memories return, he realizes that not even paradise could make him forget Penelope, Ithaca, and his purpose of going home. Throughout his journey, he also has to live with the guilt of hurting those who believed in him. Sinon wanted to fight alongside Odysseus and saw him as a true leader, only to be betrayed by the man he trusted most. His lifelong companion waited twenty years just to receive one final farewell, proving that some promises survive even the passage of time. Not even his own men remained loyal. Even after everything Odysseus had endured, and even knowing that he had come to understand the difference between right and wrong, they turned against him. They ate the sacred sheep despite knowing the punishment that awaited them. They betrayed their king’s trust and defied the will of the gods simply because greed spoke louder than reason. When Odysseus finally returns home, he realizes that the place he fought twenty years to see again is no longer the same. The home that was once his refuge has been overrun by greedy men who took advantage of his absence to steal what had always been his. Yet none of them could truly take his place. They all wanted to be king, but none of them could even string his bow. The moment Odysseus takes it back into his hands, he doesn’t just reclaim his kingdom—he reclaims the identity they tried to take from him. But even that is not the end of his journey. After reclaiming his home, he realizes there is still a debt he can never truly repay. His path continues, no longer in search of glory or war, but to honor the men who died believing in him. In the end, Odysseus left in search of war and returned in search of forgiveness. To me, that’s the film’s greatest message: war changes a man, greed destroys everything around him, but true greatness lies in accepting the weight of your choices and continuing to walk forward in honor of those who never made it home.
